Jane Austen [1775-1817] lived during a period of what is known as the Regency period. The Regency era (1811-1820) was a brief period so named after the Prince Regent who was then the Prince of Wales and ruler by proxy after his father - King George lll - was deemed unfit to rule. European fashion after the French Revolution moved away from the dictates of the French aristocracy and shifted towards a form of individual expression with hints to an individual's private self - a value which we still emulate even today. "...[F]ashion, embodying new social values, emerged as a key site of confrontation between tradition and change." [Aaslestad, K]. Women's fashion followed classical ideals, and featured high-waisted chemise dresses with short sleeves and visible breasts. This new style of natural dressing meant greater mobility and hygiene for women because dresses became lighter and were therefore more frequently changed and washed. To celebrate this period and Austen's wonderful contribution to western literature, I have designed two cropped fitted jackets to wear over these dresses or as modern day shrugs over camisoles and jeans. The choice is truly yours, ladies! |
The first of these cropped jackets is the Jane Austen Shrug knitted in stocking stitch with a crocheted border in fine lace. It is lightly fastened at the front with a simple hook and eye. For a demure look, wear over your Regency style long muslin dress or attach a long ribbon bow for a more flamboyant touch.
